LEVELLING OUR HEARTS

“In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’” Matthew 3:1-2

Many Christians today have the same problem that many Jews, particularly the hierarchy of Jewish authority had for centuries. Though we may have long been a part of the Christian culture, many still have difficulty in recognizing their need to be continuously ministered to by God’s Word, and their very real need to live daily in a spirit of repentance. Jewish authorities rejected John’s ministry of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, and many people today live as though repentance was only a one-time occurrence when we first come to Christ.

Repentance is God’s first order of business to prepare our hearts for meeting Jesus. Luke’s Gospel records John the Baptist quoting from Isaiah when he says, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation” (Luke 3:4-6). With the entry of Jesus Christ’s ministry, God’s Word is coming to the people, not to condemn, judge or criticize, but to level our hearts, putting us all on the same plain before God. Through repentance, God is directing a highway to our hearts.

Our Heavenly Father requires that we come before Him, acknowledging our sin, humbled by His Word and with a contrite heart. In the repentant heart, the Holy Spirit will awaken within us our need for a Saviour as well as the need to reposition ourselves toward God. God is urging us not to let our hearts be calloused, proud or hardened about His message of repentance, because repentance is essential for the Lord Jesus to make His home in our hearts. Repentance not only involves turning from sin, but utter dependence on Christ in moulding us to His image, which is the goal of the Gospel.

We may suffer remorse and regret from past wrongs we have done, but God puts to use the negative consequences of our sin to mould and build us. These consequences, however, are not the primary reason why God wants to level and chisel our hearts. It is because every sin we commit, every act of disobedience to His Word can easily become the catalyst that leads to more sin and ultimately drive us further from God. That is why living in a daily spirit of repentance is essential as it acts as a pre-emptive measure against sin and deepens our relationship with God. Repentance is a change of heart and mind in turning from our ways to God’s ways, and true repentance enables the work of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives.

PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your work within me that levels and prepares my heart to receive You. I ask for the Holy Spirit to soften my heart and keep me in your Word. Thank You, Lord.
