TO TEACH AND ADMONISH

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another…” Colossians 3:16 NKJV

In the above verse, to admonish means to earnestly rebuke and correct with wisdom that comes through the Word of God. The act of admonishing can be carried out when we are indwelt by the Word of God in humble pursuit of the wisdom of God. Paul tells his young protégé, Timothy, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). The obvious prerequisite for teaching and admonishing is for the Word of God to dwell in us richly.

How then is teaching and admonishing a means by which the word of Christ dwells in us? In the great commission given to us, Jesus says, “…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). Once a child of God is led by the Spirit into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, they are to grow in the knowledge of God which comes from the Word of God. For us to mature in our Christian lives, it is essential that on a daily basis we prayerfully read and meditate on Scripture. In addition, God wants us to discuss the Word of God with fellow believers, so that we learn and benefit from each other.

The instruction to teach and admonish is not targeted at pastors alone or those in full-time ministry, but is meant for every Christian. Irrespective of the position we hold or our age, teaching and correcting one another is invaluable to our spiritual growth. We may find opportunities to mentor and advise other believers who will benefit from the lessons and insights we have gained from past experiences. Other times, we may need to inquire of fellow Christians about their understanding of certain parts of Scripture of which we are in doubt or lack discernment. The key is to let the Holy Spirit take full control of our ears, lips, minds, and hearts so that we can speak and listen to the Word of God with the enlightenment of the Spirit.

In today’s world, we are bombarded with a myriad of religions, cults, fail-proof philosophies, spiritual gurus and self-help books by which we may counsel ourselves and others. Without conscious effort, it will not be long before we succumb to the omnipresent social media, the popular culture of our day, or persuasive beliefs of others, which only leads to confusion and frustration. It is imperative we constantly look to the Word of God for regulation of our attitudes and behaviours, because it is the only place we find objective truth sourced in God Himself that becomes within us a living revelation brought to light by the working of His Spirit.

PRAYER: May Your Word dwell in me richly, Lord, so that it becomes the guiding principle of my life. Encourage me to engage in discussion, and not be afraid of correcting others or of being corrected myself. Thank You, Lord.
