“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16 NKJV

God loves music! In fact, right from the beginning in Genesis 4:21, God gifted a man named Jubal with the skill of making and playing stringed instruments and pipes, and he became the father of the arts. There are many occasions in the Bible when heartfelt praise and worship of God has been expressed in music, singing and dancing. In the above verse, Paul lists three categories of songs, which co-exist in Scripture, but with a distinction between them.

The first category is psalms, also known as the hymnbook of the Jewish temple. The lyrics of psalms will quote specific Scripture verses that have been put into poetic melodies. This is a wonderful tool in remembering the Word of God as melodies and rhythm facilitate the reviving and recalling of the written word. Secondly, Paul mentions hymns, which contain objective truths about God and are doctrinal in content. The lyrics focus on primary issues that convey truths about creation, God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the cross of Christ, the resurrection, salvation and the second coming of Christ. Hymns have been around for centuries and are essentially the foundation of mostly all Christian music. Thirdly, spiritual songs, very prominent today, especially with the younger generation, are more of a subjective worship of God. Contemporary in nature, they very intimately and emotionally convey love for God, hope, gratitude and praise of God.

Paul gives further clarification as to the significance of singing different types of Christian songs. He says, “… I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding” (1 Corinthians 14:15). Singing with my spirit is singing deeply from the heart and is expressing subjective feelings toward God. Singing with understanding is doctrinally based in that we understand the truths of God, which have been filtered through our minds and settled into our hearts.

As Christians, most of us must have experienced moments when we have been spiritually renewed, refreshed and uplifted by singing our praise, gratitude and worship of God. It is a wonderful response to the life of Christ within us, and a beautiful reminder that we are His children. When it springs genuinely from the heart, singing praises to God not only ignites the soul with a tremendous surge of love and unity, but stirs within us a powerful sense of God’s presence. Music is universal and has been called “the language of the soul”. Whether psalms, hymns or spiritual songs, all is God’s delight for as He has so long treasured us, we are responding with love, praise and gratitude in song from the depths of our hearts.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of music in my life. Keep me in joyful praise, singing songs that express my love, gratitude and worship of You, even in the hard times. Thank You, Lord.
