THE DAY OF SALVATION

“Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evil doers!’" Matthew 7:22-23

A time of invitation, followed by a day of culmination will lead to an eternity of separation. This is a truth we have to recognize and acknowledge. If the net is like the kingdom of heaven, as Jesus says it is, then it would seem to include those who have affiliated themselves with the kingship of Christ, and yet are not saved. In this parable of the net, caught up in the kingdom of heaven are both good and bad fish, which include people who are not genuine in their faith.

The separation that takes place is more than a superficial sense that someone may or may not be a Christian. To many who profess to know the Lord, Jesus will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evil doers!" These are not just people on the sidelines of Christendom, but people who are doing impressive work. They have exercised what we might call spiritual gifts; some of them leaders in ministry, but they do not know Christ. A person can actively be involved in the things of God, yet not be born again of the Spirit of God. In Jesus' day, the Pharisees and teachers of the law had the Word of God, memorized it, quoted it and lived by it, but with no evidence of the presence of God in their lives.

How do we know if the Spirit of God lives in us? Romans 8:16 says, "The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children." He has created within us an appetite we never had before; a hunger and thirst for righteousness. We have also experienced a change of heart and mind that recognizes we are a sinner, and have turned from dependence upon ourselves to dependence upon Jesus Christ. It is knowing that through Christ we are reconciled to God, and the love of God fills our hearts. Jesus said, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).

The parable of the net Jesus gives is a picture of a full and final separation. We do not like to talk about hell, but it is a doctrine of Scripture and of Jesus, but in love, Jesus told the truth. Do we know Him experientially? Is there evidence that the presence of His life is within us? Hebrews 4:7 says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” Paul tells us, “…now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2) Christ is willing that none should perish. We all need saving and today is the day of salvation!

PRAYER: Thank You, Lord, for saving me. Fill my heart with Your love and make me a vessel to direct many more souls into an everlasting life with You. Thank You, Lord.
