  1 Chronicles 7-9 | John 6:22-44

“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” —Romans 5:5

Standing outside of time in what we call “eternity” are God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. As God does not exist in isolation, but in unity with the Son and the Spirit, then the Christian life is not meant to be lived in isolation, but in unity with the Trinity and with each other.

In light of the fact we were created in the image of God, there are three practical aspects we can deduce from the doctrine of Trinity. In Genesis 2:18, God says, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” The first aspect is that we were made for relationship. The mutual love of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit is meant to be reflected in our relationship with the Trinity and with others. If we are not living in wholesome relationships, we will not be satisfied for the simple reason we were created for relationship.

If we were made for relationship, the second aspect is that we were made to love and be loved. 1 John 4:16 says, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.” In order for God to love presupposes a relationship and one that has always existed within the Trinity and now for us. The night of Jesus’ arrest, He prayed, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world” (John 17:24). As Christians, we are brought into this love relationship that exists within the Trinity, and because God has poured out His love into our hearts, His love is expressed in our love for others.

The third aspect is that we are made to be a part of God’s church. The image of God is plural, not singular, and this means it cannot be just “God and me,” but “God, me and others” growing in relationship together. World evangelist John Stott has said that Christians need to repent of their individualism. It is not “me in my corner doing my own thing,” but everything God does in this world is accomplished through His church.

When we are brought into relationship with God, we are brought into relationship with His church, which is designed to reflect the plurality of God. The church is comprised of men, women, boys and girls working together, because God is Trinity. The Father does not exist in isolation, the Son does not work in isolation and the Holy Spirit is not out in isolation. Everything God does through us is better together!

PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am greatly humbled by the fact we are brought into a love relationship with the Trinity. Thank You, Lord, and I pray our relationship deepens and grows.
