WORKING WITH GOD

  Esther 6-8 | Acts 6

“The Lord is with you when you are with Him.” —2 Chronicles 15:2

God is not looking for well-meaning volunteers to accomplish His work, but for those people genuinely willing to make themselves available to Him and implement His plans. Regardless of how impressive or noble our own plans may be, God is committed only to His agenda, and as enthusiastic as we may be, God is not committed to enthusiasm, but to our obedience.

God has the right to challenge us regarding our willingness to do any work, go anywhere or pay any price in order that His interests and purposes are furthered. Paul writes, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1). We are not offering our bodies in service to God when we act on our own initiative with little regard for His will. That is not only foolish, but will result in fruitless work that simply frustrates and depletes us, because it will lack the energy, wisdom and direction of God.

The prophet Azariah said to Asa, King of Judah, “The Lord is with you when you are with him.” Jesus similarly voiced, “...where I am, My servant also will be” (John 12:26). In other words, the pace is not set by the servant, but by the Lord Jesus Christ. Rather than asking Christ to be with us, we need to make sure we are with Him. Many people have the tendency to pray for Christ’s presence, but this is a redundant prayer. Within the context of the great and final commission Jesus gave immediately prior to His ascension, He promised His presence, saying, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). If we act under the authority of Jesus, implementing His strategy, then “I am with you always” is an absolute. God is always with us in the sense of His omnipresence, but this presence speaks of His power and mighty working.

God does not call us to accomplish a task, but He calls us to be the channel for which He will accomplish the task. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 says, “The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” God provides the resources, the direction, wisdom and ability, which makes Him responsible for the outcome. Our responsibility is to be available to Him with a willingness to step out in obedience and trust Him. Only the life of God perpetuates the work of God, and as we live in intimate union with Him, we grow sensitive to His voice and to His leading. We cannot have a higher calling than working together with God.

PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, I ask that You make me a channel through which Your agenda is furthered, and help me to step ?out in obedience and trust Your working. Thank You, Lord.
